Jessie Hulst
Always learning. Always teaching.
A Bit of Background
Hi, I'm Jessie Hulst. I was born and grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the eldest of three girls. I always loved school, so when I attended Calvin University, I pursued a degree in teaching. In my mind, I pictured I would be a classroom teacher. However, when Kentwood Public Schools had an Elementary English Language (EL) teaching position open up, I decided to try it. I now believe it must be one of the best teaching positions around!

Each day, I work with groups of students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. I design and teach English Language Development (ELD) lessons. The students and families I work with come from all over the world, speaking more than 30 different home languages. Through teaching, I get to share my passion for learning about our world: its people, places, nature, history, and languages (I especially love teaching and learning about plants!) My hope is that how I teach increases my students' excitement about learning. While we learn together, my other big hope is that we will develop meaningful relationships that help us all to grow as humans.

In my free time, I like to get out and explore this world whenever possible. I love to hike, camp, backpack, and bike, especially with my sisters. I also enjoy playing card and board games with family and friends. In the summer, you might find me working in my vegetable garden or rain garden. At any time of the year, you might see me reading a book... biographies and history are my favorites.
